Siquijor Island, Philippines: Southeast Asia’s Emerging Tourism Gem

Siquijor Island– Once known as the “Healing Island” and shrouded in mystery, Siquijor is now stepping into the spotlight as one of the Philippines’ most sought-after travel destinations. With its stunning beaches, clear turquoise waters, lush green landscapes, and deep-rooted cultural traditions, the island has been captivating visitors from around the world. This year, its growing popularity earned it a spot on Agoda’s prestigious New Horizons list, recognizing it as a must-visit destination for global travelers.

With increasing international attention, Siquijor is on track to becoming a major tourism hub in Southeast Asia. Tourists from near and far are drawn to its tranquil beauty, mystical traditions, and rich marine biodiversity, making it one of the fastest-rising vacation spots in the region.

From Hidden Gem to Global Sensation

For years, Siquijor remained a well-kept secret, often overshadowed by more famous destinations like Boracay, Palawan, and Cebu. But recently, word has spread about its untouched charm, and travelers seeking unique experiences are flocking to the island.

Agoda’s New Horizons list, which highlights up-and-coming travel hotspots, solidified Siquijor’s reputation as a rising star. This recognition signals a turning point for the island’s tourism industry, marking the beginning of an era where Siquijor isn’t just a hidden paradise—it’s a bucket-list destination.

Siquijor Island

Few understand this transformation better than Arlene Mack, owner of Royal Cliff Resort and chair of both the Pollution Control Officers Association and the San Juan Association of Resorts and Restaurants. Having lived on the island for over 25 years, Mack has seen Siquijor evolve from a quiet sanctuary into a bustling travel destination.

“When my husband and I got married, we traveled extensively—even abroad,” Mack recalled. “But when he asked me where I wanted to settle down, I chose Siquijor. From the moment I set foot on this island, I felt a deep sense of peace. The people are warm, honest, and welcoming, and the natural beauty and cultural richness here are unparalleled. It’s truly a healing island.”

A Tourism Boom Like Never Before

Siquijor’s tourism industry is growing at an unprecedented pace. Hotels and resorts across the island are experiencing occupancy rates of 95 to 100 percent—a clear indicator of the surge in visitors eager to experience its magic.

Mack hopes that every traveler who visits will feel the same sense of wonder she did when she first arrived decades ago.

“I want them to experience the heart of Siquijor—the kindness of its people, the serenity of its landscapes, and the unique energy that makes this island unlike any other,” she said.

Siquijor’s Underwater Paradise

While Siquijor is often associated with folklore and mysticism, it is equally a dream destination for adventure seekers and ocean lovers.

Yeongnim Gwang, a free diver from Korea, is one of many who return time and time again to explore the island’s incredible marine life.

“I love the sea, and Siquijor’s underwater world is breathtaking. The diversity of sea creatures here is amazing. Today, I had the chance to dive with sea turtles—it was unforgettable,” Gwang shared.

Siquijor’s commitment to preserving its marine environment is another reason it remains a favorite among divers and snorkelers.

“The island is naturally beautiful, and I can see that its environment is well-protected. That’s what makes it even more special,” Gwang added.

For Michael, a traveler from England, Siquijor’s crystal-clear waters and vibrant marine biodiversity left a lasting impression.

“We saw several turtles today—one of them was huge! There were so many fish, incredible coral formations, and the water visibility was fantastic. It’s an easy place to explore, and I’d definitely love to come back. Siquijor is one of our favorite islands,” he said.

Similarly, Nicolas from France was captivated by the island’s raw, untouched beauty, calling it a true paradise for nature lovers.

“Siquijor feels wild and natural, which makes it special. The people here live in harmony with the sea and the land. It’s perfect for those who want to connect with nature,” he noted.

A Bright Future for Siquijor Tourism

With the island’s growing popularity, local leaders see a bright future ahead. Governor Jake Vincent Villa envisions Siquijor as a major player in Southeast Asian tourism.

“Once an island known only through whispers and myths, Siquijor is now a thriving tourism and business hub. We are on our way to becoming the next premier investment destination in Southeast Asia,” Villa stated.

However, with great growth comes great responsibility. Siquijor’s biggest challenge will be maintaining a balance between tourism expansion and environmental preservation.

Sustainable Tourism: Keeping Siquijor Pristine

As more travelers discover the wonders of Siquijor, sustainability efforts are more important than ever. Protecting the island’s natural beauty and cultural heritage is a top priority for the local government and tourism industry. Conservation programs are already in place to:
