Punjabi Students Expectations: Indian students of preparations for the September semester are thrown into chaos as Canada’s Northern College in Scarborough abruptly rejects admissions. Oversubscription as a result of high applicant response; college offers refunds of fees and transfers to other institutions. The Sikh community voices its worries. Students struggle with logistics and finances.

Numerous Indian students, many of whom are from the Punjab, have had their plans thrown into turmoil due to a “abrupt decision” made by Canada’s Northern College, Scarborough campus.
The college canceled admissions one month before the scheduled September semester, leaving the students in a precarious situation. They were prepared for their approaching trip to Canada and had previously made investments in travel and lodging. The excessive volume of applications the university received is given as the cause.

According to Northern College, Canada students visas, the college received an abnormally high volume of applications. “The college sent out more offer letters than there were seats, figuring that not every applicant would be granted embassy clearance and a visa. However, it  turned out that this time, the rejection rate was substantially lower, causing the college to halt admissions,” he stated.
He said that the college made an effort to resolve the issue by promising to reimburse students’ payments in full. They also gave students the choice to accept offers from other colleges with the option of transferring the same costs to the institute of their choice.

When students who had already paid their fees started getting emails from Canadian universities informing them of the abrupt cancellation of their admissions, the upsetting news became public. The abrupt choice shocked and outraged the impacted youngsters and their families. They received an email informing him of the lack of availability of seats in the college.

In addition to having an impact on the applicants, the cancellation of admissions has raised issues among the Canadian Sikh community. Numerous advocacy organizations, such as the World Sikh Organization of Canada, have spoken out against the college’s action and demanded that it be rethought.
Parents of the impacted pupils have also drawn attention to the logistical and financial difficulties they encounter.

Consequently, The misunderstanding between the Canadian government, the Immigration Department, and the universities is now having an impact on thousands of students. Many of these prospective scholars had spent a significant amount of money in advance of their typical September-23 intake, including airfare and shopping. However, the non-refundable charges for flights reserved in August have left the afflicted students with considerable financial losses.

In an effort to find a solution, Canadian universities have requested detailed reports from these students in order to process refunds for the tuition they had paid in advance. While this is going on, several other universities are advising applicants to think about delaying their admissions from the January 24 intake to the 2023 intake.
